Microsoft Office 2010 (formerly known as Office 14) is a productivity suite for Microsoft Windows, expected to replace Office 2007 in early 2010. Similarly to the previous versions of Microsoft Office, it will contain many applications including the most widely used Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Outlok.
When will Office 2010 be released?
Office 2010 is expected to be released in the first quarter of 2010, as Microsoft has announced. What’s new about Office 2010?
According to Microsoft, Office 2010 will be more ‘role-based’ than the previous versions of the suite. Microsoft’s VP for the Enterprise and Partner Group Simon Witts has said: “There will be features tailored to employees in roles such as research and development professionals, sales persons, and human resources.”
In addition to the above, Office 2010 is expected to use the Office Open XML file format, eliminating most of the current compatibility issues with other Office Suites.
Microsoft is also planning to release a web-based version of Office 2010, called Office Web. This version would make Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote available in the Internet, without any download requirements.
What’s the difference between Office 2010 and Office 14?
Microsoft Office 2010 is the official name of the productivity suite to be released by Microsoft in 2010. Office 14 is simply a codename that Microsoft used during the early development of the suite. Similar method was used during the development of earlier versions of MS Office, as well as other Microsoft’s products – Office 2007 being initially called Office 12, Windows XP codenamed Windows Whistler etc.
If Office 2007 is version 12 and Office 2010 is 14 then where’s Office 13?
Microsoft has decided to skip the version number 13 due to the general aversion to the number 13. Contrary to the rumours, Microsoft has never worked on a version called Office 13, as they started working on Office 14 (2010) as soon as the development of Office 12 (2007) was finished.
